» Killifish

A 1996 survey, funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, suggesting the economic impact of recreational fishing found that over 6 million resident and non-resident recreational fishermen spent more than $3 billion on Florida sport fishing. Currently, most of the supply of natural bait for fishing is provided by independent trappers of marine species or freshwater farmers in other states. Interest by aquaculture producers in the baitfish industry and inspired by the University of Florida along with the  Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services the need to conduct feasibility studies based on  economic and market research to determine the viability of commercially culturing and marketing of saltwater Gulf killifish. Based on the information developed, aquaculture farms in North Florida have begun production. A more recent study by those agencies suggests that Gulf killifish have good market potential as live marine bait.
